Jerry John Rawlings

Jerry John Rawlings was the most consequential figure in Ghana's modern political history, a charismatic air force officer who seized power twice, ruled for nearly two decades, and then handed the country a stable democracy. Few leaders have divided opinion so sharply while leaving so deep a mark.

Early life

He was born in Accra on 22 June 1947, the son of a Scottish father and a Ghanaian mother. He was educated at Achimota College and the military academy at Teshie, and commissioned into the Ghanaian air force in 1969, where he became a respected pilot.

Two coups

In June 1979 he led a group of junior officers in a coup that promised to purge corruption from public life. He handed power to an elected civilian government soon after, but on 31 December 1981 he overthrew it and installed the Provisional National Defence Council, beginning a long period of direct rule.

From soldier to elected president

As the 1990s opened, Rawlings shed the uniform. He founded the National Democratic Congress, won the 1992 election and again in 1996, and governed as a civilian president until 2001. His combined nineteen years in power made him the longest-serving leader in Ghana's history, a period credited with political stability and economic reform.

Legacy

He died in Accra on 12 November 2020. Revered by many as a champion of the ordinary Ghanaian and criticised by others for the excesses of his military years, Rawlings remains the defining personality of Ghana's Fourth Republic, the man who both disrupted and ultimately steadied the nation.
