About Alfred Kotey

Alfred Kotey, nicknamed the Cobra, was a world champion and Olympian who became the fourth Ghanaian to win a world boxing title, part of the golden line of fighters from Accra.

Early life

He was born on 3 June 1968 in Accra. A talented amateur, he represented Ghana at the 1988 Seoul Olympics before turning professional that same year, quickly making his mark by winning the Commonwealth title in only his sixth fight.

World champion

On 30 July 1994 he became the WBO bantamweight champion, outpointing Rafael Del Valle for the title. He was Ghana's fourth world champion, following DK Poison, Azumah Nelson and Ike Quartey, and defended the belt before losing it in 1995 and later winning a WBC International super-bantamweight title.

Record

He finished with a professional record of 26 wins, 17 by knockout, from 43 fights, a career that took him around the world in search of the biggest nights.

Legacy

Kotey died on 30 June 2020 in New York City, where he was being treated for a stroke. He is remembered as one of the champions who carried Ghana's boxing tradition through the 1990s, a fighter who reached the top on the global stage.
