Azumah Nelson

Azumah Nelson is widely regarded as the greatest boxer Africa has ever produced, a Ghanaian featherweight and super-featherweight world champion whose skill, intelligence and longevity earned him the nickname The Professor and a place in the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Early life

He was born on 19 July 1958 in Accra, and came up through the boxing culture of the capital's Bukom neighbourhood, the district that has produced more Ghanaian champions than anywhere else. As an amateur he was outstanding, winning featherweight gold at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton with a record of 50 wins and just two losses.

World champion

He turned professional in 1979 and became a two-weight world champion, holding the WBC featherweight title from 1984 to 1987 and the WBC super-featherweight title across two reigns between 1988 and 1997. His career was defined by unforgettable bouts against legends including Wilfredo Gomez, Salvador Sanchez and Jeff Fenech, whom he memorably knocked out in their rematch.

The Professor

His nickname reflected his ring intelligence; he seemed to teach his opponents a lesson every time he fought. He retired in 2008 with 39 wins from 47 fights, 28 by knockout, and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, a rare honour for an African fighter.
