Nana Yaw Konadu

Nana Yaw Konadu was a two-weight world champion and one of the finest fighters Ghana has produced, a hard-hitting boxer who rose from a difficult childhood to the top of the sport.

Early life

He was born Nana Yaw Konadu Yeboah on 15 February 1964 in Sunyani, one of eleven children who faced a hard upbringing after losing their father young. He turned to the streets as a boy to help support his family before boxing gave him a way out.

World champion

He made his professional debut in 1985, and on 7 November 1989 he captured the WBC super-flyweight title with a decision win over the two-time champion Gilberto Roman. He later added the WBA bantamweight title, which he held twice between 1996 and 1998, beating Thailand's Veeraphol Sahaprom to claim it.

Record

A powerful puncher, he compiled a professional record of 41 wins, five losses and a draw, with 32 of those wins coming by knockout, marking him as a genuine two-weight world champion.

Later life

After his career he moved into boxing administration to help reform the sport that made him. A two-time world champion, Nana Yaw Konadu stands among the most accomplished boxers Ghana has produced.
