Otto Addo

Otto Addo has had two careers at the top of football, first as a dependable midfielder and then as a respected coach, culminating in his role as head coach of Ghana's Black Stars and a talent developer at one of Europe's biggest clubs.

Early life and playing career

He was born on 9 June 1975 in Hamburg, Germany, to Ghanaian parents, and holds dual nationality. As a midfielder he made his name in the Bundesliga, winning the German league title with Borussia Dortmund, and he represented Ghana at the 2006 World Cup, the country's first appearance at the tournament.

Coaching

After retiring he built a coaching career, becoming a specialist talent coach at Borussia Dortmund, where he worked with some of Europe's brightest young players, including Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho, helping nurture the next generation at a club famed for developing talent.

Ghana head coach

He took charge of the Black Stars on an interim basis in 2022, leading them at the World Cup in Qatar, where Ghana beat South Korea before a group-stage exit. He returned for a second spell as head coach in 2024, balancing his commitment to the national team with his development work in Germany.
