Ayi Kwei Armah

Ayi Kwei Armah is one of Africa's most important novelists, a writer whose unflinching examination of corruption, materialism and disillusionment in post-independence Africa produced some of the continent's most enduring literature.

Early life and education

He was born in 1939 in Takoradi, into a family with Ga royal heritage. He attended Achimota College before winning a scholarship to the Groton School in the United States, going on to study sociology at Harvard and creative writing at Columbia, an education that spanned continents.

Career

He returned to Ghana in 1964 to work as a scriptwriter for Ghana Television and a teacher, and later edited the magazine Jeune Afrique in Paris and taught across East and Southern Africa. That restless, pan-African life informed the sweep of his writing.

The novels

His debut novel, The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born, published in 1968, is a landmark of African literature, a searing portrait of greed and moral decay in a newly independent nation. He followed it with Fragments, Why Are We So Blest?, and later, more historically minded works such as Two Thousand Seasons and The Healers, deepening his exploration of Africa's past and future.

Standing

Concerned throughout with the gap between appearance and reality, spirit and substance, Ayi Kwei Armah attained international renown and profoundly influenced how a generation of writers wrote about Africa. He remains one of the towering figures of Ghanaian and African letters.
