Haruna Iddrisu

Haruna Iddrisu is one of the most prominent politicians of northern Ghana, a lawyer and long-serving member of parliament who has held senior roles on both sides of the house and returned to government as a cabinet minister.

Early life and education

He was born on 8 September 1970 in Tamale. He studied sociology at the University of Ghana and qualified as a barrister, becoming a member of the Ghana Bar Association in 2002, a legal grounding that has shaped his parliamentary career.

Parliamentary career

He was first elected member of parliament for Tamale South in 2004 and has held the seat ever since. A leading figure in the NDC, he served as Minister of Communications and later Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, before becoming Minority Leader in parliament from 2017 to 2023.

Return to government

Following the NDC's victory in the 2024 election, he was nominated by President Mahama as Minister of Education, returning him to the cabinet and to one of the most important portfolios in government.

Beyond politics

A keen football enthusiast, he owns the clubs Karela United and Steadfast, investing in the development of Ghanaian talent. Experienced, articulate and durable, Haruna Iddrisu remains one of the most influential voices in the country's politics and a leading representative of the north.
