John Evans Atta Mills

John Evans Atta Mills was a law professor turned president, a soft-spoken leader known across Ghana as the King of Peace whose 2009 election marked a milestone in the country's democratic maturity, and whose death in office three years later plunged the nation into grief.

Early life and academia

He was born on 21 July 1944. He trained as a lawyer and spent about 25 years teaching at the University of Ghana's law school, earning a reputation as a respected scholar long before he entered frontline politics.

Rise to the presidency

He served as vice president under Jerry Rawlings from 1997, and after two unsuccessful presidential bids in 2000 and 2004, he won at the third attempt, narrowly defeating Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2008 election. He was inaugurated on 7 January 2009, a peaceful transfer of power that strengthened Ghana's democratic standing.

Presidency

Known for his calm, conciliatory manner, Mills governed with an emphasis on peace and stability, earning the affectionate title Asomdwehene, the King of Peace. His presidency oversaw the start of Ghana's oil production and steady economic growth.

Death and legacy

On 24 July 2012, months before the next election, Mills died in office after a short illness, the first sitting Ghanaian president to die in power. He was buried at Asomdwee Park in Accra, and is remembered as a gentle, principled leader who embodied the peaceful spirit he preached.
