Castro

Castro was one of the most electrifying hiplife artists of his era, a hitmaker known as the Destroyer for the string of chart-toppers he produced, whose mysterious disappearance in 2014 became one of the most haunting stories in Ghanaian entertainment.

Early life

He was born Theophilus Tagoe on 1 May 1982 in Takoradi, in the Western Region. He rose through the vibrant hiplife scene of the early 2000s, developing a versatile, infectious style that blended highlife melody with contemporary beats.

Career

His debut album Sradinam in 2003 shot him to prominence, and he followed it with hits like Toffee, Comm Centre and African Girls. So reliably did his songs become instant hits that he earned the nickname the Destroyer. In 2006 he won Hiplife Artiste of the Year and Hiplife Album of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards for Toffee. He was also a frequent collaborator, notably with the comedian Funny Face.

Disappearance

On 6 July 2014, Castro disappeared at the Ada Estuary along with a companion, Janet Bandu, following a jet-ski accident while on holiday with the footballer Asamoah Gyan and friends. Despite an extensive search, their bodies were never recovered. He was officially declared dead in 2021.

Legacy

His disappearance shocked the nation and remains the subject of enduring speculation. Yet beyond the mystery, Castro is remembered for the music, a run of joyful, unforgettable hits that made him one of the most beloved hiplife stars of his generation.
