Stonebwoy

Stonebwoy is the artist who gave Ghanaian dancehall a passport. Blending Afropop, dancehall and reggae, he has spent more than a decade as one of the country's two dominant music figures, and he has carried the sound further onto the international reggae circuit than almost any Ghanaian before him.

Early life

He was born Livingstone Etse Satekla on 5 March 1988 in Ashaiman, near Accra, with roots in the Volta Region. He attended Methodist Day Secondary School, where a classmate named Michael Owusu Addo would go on to become Sarkodie, and later earned a degree in marketing from the University of Professional Studies in 2013.

Rise to fame

His first real notice came on the radio rap competition Kasahare Level on Adom FM, where he outlasted a string of rivals and built an underground following. He turned that momentum into a recording career, adopting the descant BHIM and the trademark shout that fans now finish for him.

Music career

His debut album Grade 1 landed in 2012, followed by Necessary Evil in 2014 and the acclaimed Epistles of Mama in 2017, records that moved him from promising newcomer to headline act. His music fuses Jamaican dancehall and reggae with distinctly Ghanaian melody, a blend that has won him fans across Africa and the wider reggae world.

Awards

He took Best International Act: Africa at the BET Awards in 2015, and has been named Artiste of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards, including in 2015 and again in 2024, a near-decade gap that speaks to his staying power at the top.

He heads his own outfit, Burniton Music Group, and leads a fanbase and movement he calls BHIM Nation. He is married to Dr Louisa Ansong Satekla, a dentist, and the couple have two children.
