Samini

Samini is one of the great crossover figures of Ghanaian music, a singer whose fusion of dancehall, reggae, hip-hop and highlife made him a continental star and a mentor to the generation that followed. For many, he is simply the godfather of modern Ghanaian dancehall.

Early life

He was born Emmanuel Andrews Samini on 22 December 1981 in Accra, with roots in Wa in the Upper West Region, where he has since been enskinned as a chief with the title Pilibii Naa. His music has always carried that blend of southern coastal sounds and northern heritage.

From Batman to Samini

He first performed under the name Batman, an acronym for Best of All Time Man, from the late 1990s. His debut album Dankwasere in 2004 won two Ghana Music Awards and established him, and in 2007 he rebranded as Samini with a self-titled album that marked his arrival as a fully formed star.

International recognition

His breakthrough onto the world stage came in 2006, when he became the first winner of the Best African Act at the MOBO Awards in the United Kingdom, a landmark for Ghanaian music abroad. Songs like Linda and My Own carried his reggae-inflected sound across the continent.

Mentor and legacy

Through his label, now known as High Grade Family, Samini helped nurture a remarkable roster of talent, among them Stonebwoy, Kofi Kinaata, Kaakie and others. Decades into his career he remains a commanding live performer and one of the most influential figures Ghanaian music has produced.
