About Daddy Lumba

For four decades, Daddy Lumba was the sound of Ghanaian highlife. More than almost any artist of his generation, he shaped what the genre became after the 1980s, and by the time of his death in 2025 he was widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential musicians the country has ever produced.

Early life

He was born Charles Kwadwo Fosu on 29 September 1964 in Nsuta, in the Ashanti Region, to parents who were both teachers. His gift showed early; he led the Juaben Senior High School choir in the early 1980s, the first sign of a voice that would define a genre.

The Lumba Brothers and a solo empire

His career began in partnership with Nana Acheampong as the Lumba Brothers, whose debut album Yeeye Aka Akwantuo Mu introduced a fresh, synth-driven take on highlife. After the duo parted in the early 1990s he went solo and founded his own label, Lumba Productions, giving him control of a catalogue that would grow to some 34 albums.

The hits

Few Ghanaian artists have written as many standards. Songs like Aben Wo Ha, Theresa, Playboy, Makra Mo and Sika became fixtures of Ghanaian life, played at weddings, funerals and everywhere in between, and his willingness to push the boundaries of lyrics and sound kept him relevant across generations.

Honours and legacy

He won seven Ghana Music Awards over his career, received an EMY Africa Legend award in 2018, and was given a National Honours Grand Medal in 2024. He died in Accra on 26 July 2025, at the age of 60. The national mourning that followed underlined what Ghanaians already knew: that Daddy Lumba was not simply a musician but a permanent part of the country's cultural memory.
