About Kojo Antwi

Kojo Antwi, known to generations of Ghanaians simply as Mr Music Man, is one of the most enduring and beloved vocalists the country has produced. For four decades his romantic, genre-blending highlife has been the soundtrack to weddings, love stories and quiet evenings across Ghana.

Early life

He was born Julius Kojo Antwi on 24 November 1959 in Accra, one of thirteen siblings, and grew up in the suburb of Darkuman. Music was his path from early on, and he developed into a complete artist, a singer, songwriter, arranger and producer.

A signature sound

He launched his solo career with the album All I Need Is You in 1986, and over time crafted a distinctive style that fused Ghanaian highlife with Congolese soukous, Caribbean lovers rock and American soul and R&B. That blend made him unmistakable and gave his love songs a warmth that crossed borders.

A vast catalogue

With more than twenty albums to his name, Kojo Antwi built one of the deepest catalogues in Ghanaian music. Songs like Tom and Jerry became standards across West Africa, and his live performances remain events in their own right.

Standing

He was the first Ghanaian artist to be nominated for a BET Award, and served as chairman of the country's music rights organisation. Decades into his career, Mr Music Man remains a national treasure, the romantic voice of Ghanaian highlife.
