Kwesi Arthur

Kwesi Arthur turned a bedroom-recorded single into one of the defining Ghanaian rap breakthroughs of his generation. Emerging from Tema with an introspective, melodic style, he became the face of a new wave of young artists who built their audiences online.

Early life

He was born Emmanuel Kwesi Danso Arthur Junior on 18 December 1999 in Tema. Like many of his generation, he came to music through the internet, uploading tracks and building a following before any label or radio play found him.

Ground Up Chale and breakthrough

A pivotal moment came in 2015 when he linked up with Ground Up Chale, the Tema-based collective and platform that gave him a studio and a creative home. In 2017 his single Grind Day became a national anthem for hustle and ambition, and a star-studded remix featuring Sarkodie and Medikal pushed it even further.

Career and awards

He built on that momentum with projects like the Live from Nkrumah Krom EPs, the second of which drew millions of streams in its first week. He was named Rapper of the Year and won Hip-Hop Song of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards, and earned a nomination for the Viewer's Choice Best International Act at the 2018 BET Awards, rare recognition for an artist so early in his career.
