Ofori Amponsah

Ofori Amponsah is regarded as one of Ghana's finest highlife voices of the 21st century, a singer-songwriter whose romantic, melodic songs made him a superstar before he, too, turned toward the church.

Early life

He was born Samuel Ofori Amponsah on 2 March 1974 in Agogo, in the Ashanti Region. He came up through the highlife tradition, developing the smooth, emotive voice that would become his trademark and earn him the nickname Mr All 4 Real.

Highlife stardom

He built one of the most successful catalogues in modern highlife, releasing more than a dozen albums with hits including Otoolege, Emmanuella, Lady and Odwo. His crowning night came at the 2006 Ghana Music Awards, where he won seven honours including Artist of the Year, cementing his place at the summit of the genre.

Ministry and return

In 2013 he stepped away from secular music to found The Family of Faith and Love Ministries and become a pastor, a decision that surprised his fans. He later returned to performing, balancing his musical career with his faith, and continues to release new music.

Standing

Decades into his career, Ofori Amponsah remains one of the most beloved highlife artists in Ghana, a romantic balladeer whose songs have become standards and whose voice still fills concert halls.
