Reggie Rockstone

Reggie Rockstone is the man who gave Ghanaian hip-hop its own name and identity. Widely hailed as the godfather of hiplife, he took the swagger of American rap and fused it with Twi and highlife rhythms, creating a genre that would define Ghanaian popular music for a generation.

Early life

He was born Reginald Yaw Asante Ossei on 11 April 1964. Though born in the United Kingdom, he spent formative years in Kumasi and Accra before returning to London. He was the son of the celebrated fashion designer Ricci Ossei, and grew up between British and Ghanaian worlds.

From hip-hop to hiplife

He began in the 1980s as a dancer immersed in the hip-hop scene, and in the early 1990s rapped in London as part of the group PLZ. His pivotal move came around 1994, when he began rapping in Twi over hip-hop and highlife beats, an innovation he christened hiplife.

Makaa Maka and impact

His 1997 album Makaa Maka, with its hit Choo Boi, is regarded as the foundational hiplife record. It proved that Ghanaian rap in a local language could be commercially and culturally powerful, and opened the door for the entire generation of artists who followed, from Obrafour to Sarkodie.

Legacy

He later formed the group VVIP and remained a cultural figure well beyond music. More than any other artist, Reggie Rockstone shaped the sound of modern Ghanaian pop; without hiplife, much of what came after would not exist, and he is rightly celebrated as its originator.
