Early life

He was born Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr. on 17 October 1984 in Accra. Music came early, and so did reinvention, the recurring theme of a career built as much on branding as on sound.

From Bandana to Shatta Wale

He first broke through in 2004 as Bandana, whose single Bandana from Ghana became a national hit. When the momentum faded he disappeared, retooled, and returned around 2013 under a new name, Shatta Wale, with a harder dancehall focus and a bigger persona.
