Lydia Forson

Lydia Forson is one of the most outspoken and accomplished figures in Ghanaian entertainment, an award-winning actress, writer and producer who is as well known for her sharp social commentary as for her screen work.

Early life and education

She was born on 24 October 1984 in Mankessim. Part of her early schooling took place in Kentucky in the United States before her family returned to Ghana, where she attended Akosombo International School and went on to the University of Ghana, graduating with a degree in English and information studies.

Acting career

She began with small roles in the mid-2000s before her breakthrough as Dede in the hit film The Perfect Picture. She built a strong body of work with titles such as A Sting in a Tale, Masquerades and the Nigerian comedy Phone Swap, establishing herself as a versatile lead across West African cinema.

Awards

Her talent was recognised early. She won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role in 2010, one of the most prestigious honours in African film, after an earlier nomination as best upcoming actress.

Voice and activism
