Nana Ama McBrown

Nana Ama McBrown is one of the most beloved figures in Ghanaian entertainment, an actress who became a television star and then a national institution. Warm, quick and endlessly watchable, she has built a career that spans Kumawood film, cooking shows and prime-time talk.

Early life

She was born Felicity Ama Agyemang in Kumasi. After a difficult childhood, she and her siblings were raised by Kofi McBrown, whose surname she took and made famous. That upbringing gave her the grounded, relatable quality audiences would later love.

Acting career

She rose to prominence through the television series Tentacles before finding mainstream stardom in Twi-language Kumawood films such as Asoreba and Kumasi Yonko. Her comic timing and screen presence made her one of the industry's biggest draws, and she went on to work as a producer and director as well as a performer.

Television

Her second act came on television. She hosted the cooking show The McBrown Kitchen and, most prominently, the entertainment talk show United Showbiz on UTV, which she turned into appointment viewing before moving to Media General in 2023. On screen she became one of the most recognisable presenters in the country.

Personal life

She married Maxwell Mawu Mensah in 2016 and gave birth to a daughter in 2019, a much-followed chapter in her very public life. Through film, food and talk, Nana Ama McBrown has remained, for two decades, one of the most cherished personalities Ghanaian entertainment has produced.
