Van Vicker

Van Vicker was one of the faces that defined the golden era of Ghanaian and Nigerian cinema, a heartthrob whose mixed heritage and easy screen presence made him one of the most recognisable actors in West Africa.

Early life

He was born Joseph van Vicker on 1 August 1977 in Accra, to a Ghanaian-Liberian mother and a Dutch father. His father died when he was six, and he was raised across different parts of the world by his mother, an upbringing that left him describing himself as a global citizen.

From radio to the screen

He began in media as a radio presenter and television personality in Accra through the late 1990s and early 2000s, appearing in the university-life series Suncity. His move into film came with Divine Love, the same debut that launched Jackie Appiah and Majid Michel, casting him as a supporting player who would soon become a lead.

Nollywood stardom

His success at home quickly opened the door to Nollywood, where he became a major star, appearing alongside leading Nigerian actresses and cementing his status across the continent. His looks and charm made him one of the most sought-after romantic leads of his era.
