Mercy Asiedu

Mercy Asiedu is a veteran of Ghanaian cinema whose career helped bring Twi-language film into the mainstream. A gifted comic and dramatic actress, she has been a fixture of Kumawood for more than two decades.

Early life

She was born on 9 May 1971. Before acting, she worked as a seamstress, and her path to the screen ran through performance groups that entertained church congregations. Her entry into acting was guided by her godfather, Apostle Kwadwo Sarfo, as part of the Kristo Asafo concert party group.

Breakthrough

She built her early reputation in concert party and church performances before moving into film. Her role in Asoreba proved pivotal; the film is often credited with helping usher Twi-language Ghanaian movies into the mainstream, and her performance was central to its success.

Career

She went on to star in a wide range of films, including Obaakofou, Sumsum, Aware and many others, establishing herself as one of the most recognisable and versatile actresses in Kumasi-based cinema, equally comfortable in comedy and drama.

Standing

Married to a traditional chief, and celebrated across a career spanning more than 25 years, Mercy Asiedu is regularly named among the greatest Kumawood actresses of all time, a pioneer who helped build the industry into what it became.
